What is an NPE?

At-home DNA testing kits have become increasingly popular in recent years. According to, over 26 million people have taken an at-home DNA test to date.

Unfortunately, amidst all the curiosity and fun, some have discovered hidden family secrets. Many of us have discovered that one or both of the people we believed were our biological parents are not our biological parents.

This new phenomenon is often referred to as a "DNA surprise." The term for someone who has made this shocking discovery is referred to as an "NPE," which stands for "Not Parent Expected" or "Non-parental event." Estimates vary regarding just how many people may be NPE's. However, most experts agree that between 7%-10% of the population of the United States may be NPE's. However, this phenomenon is not limited to just the U.S., make no mistake, this is a worldwide phenomenon.

This discovery can be highly traumatic to not only the person who discovers the truth about their biological parentage but may be traumatic for family members as well, including the victim's spouse and children, their birth certificate parents, siblings, other extended family members, not to mention the members of the newly discovered family members.
